A Borne cable reports the death of Leon Cavallo, the composer. Sir Douglas Haig has taken thi title of Earl of Bemersyde. A Melbourne cablegram reports the death of Sir Henry Hodges, senior puisne judge in the Supreme Court.
Mrs. Puller, Urenui, has received advice that Iter eon, C.S.M. G. N. Fuller Is returning on HM.T. Cordoba, whiefc 1» due to arrive in Wellington on August 30.' Mr. P. A. Hoskin, Matapu, has received advice that his son, Private L. A. Hoskin, is returning on the Ellenga, due to arrive at Auckland about August 888.
An Ottawa message states that Mr W. L. Mackenzie King has bees selected by the National Liberal Federation to succeed Sir Wilfred Laurier as leader of the Liberal Party. At a meeting of the Bell Block branch of the Taranaki Provincial Farmtjrs' Union, the resignation of Mr. L, \V. Bishop, a member of the executive, who has left the district and intends to reside in the Auckland Province, was received with regret, and a resolution was passed wishing him success in his new venture.

Mr. Robert Martin Wallis, who die* m Auckland on Monday, aged 76 was the son of one of New Zealand's earliest settlers the ate Rev.
