EXTORTING UNJUST PROFITS. ACTION TAKEN IN AUSTRALIA. By Telegraph.—Press Awn.—Cowtlgh' Received August 8, 730 p.jn, Melbourne, August 8. A deputation from the Provincial Press Association asked the Minister of Customs for relief from the operations of the paper-producing combine (aid to exist in the United States and Canada. The deputation suggested that .news printing paper be admitted free, or, if taxed, not above five per cent., apd, in any case, no preference to be grantefl to Canadian till a searching Inquiry was made into the methods oi the American-Canadian conibine in cornering shipping and extorting unjust profits. It was stated that the America paper combine has established itself in Canada and controls the whole freight lines in Australia, exacting a profit on tho paper of fully 100 per cent, above th» pre-war figure. The Minister assured the deputation that the Government would do nothing to play into the hands of tho com-bine.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
