Members of all parties denounced the increase at a time when tho Government waß urging people to economise.

Mr. Bonar Law admitted the Bill was unpopular but urgently needed. It was good business to pay well to get work well done. Ministers' salaries should. Lloyd's Begietffr estimates that if there had been no war the world tonnage would have increased by !>,080,01)0, making the total loss, including America, due to the war 14,202,000, but America as the result of the war has built over her normal increase, hence the net loss is 7,473,000. If allowance is made for loss of efficiency in construction arid the retention of old ships beyond their normal efficiency, the net loss is 8,500,f100, equivalent to 12,500,000 tons dead-weight.—Aus.-N.Z. Though the Labor party to-day moves a reduction of the total grants to the war leaders from £580,000 to £200,000, the grants meet with general approval.
