MR. SMITH AT OAKUJtA. Mr. S. G. Smith, M.P., addressed about 25 settlers at Oakura last night on the lines of his previous speech at Ta tarsimaka. Mr. <i. A. Adlam presided. The question of increased production was stressed, both ns to primary and other industries, also the need for increasing the population by systematic immigration, in order to meet the huge indebtedness duo to tho war.

Asked whether it was true that the recent increase in the price of cement had affected the Borough Council's hydroelectric extension works to the extent of £2300, and whether he could suggest any means for controlling the price of cement, Mr. Smith replied that he was unaware whether the Borough works would suffer as mentioned, but he suggested that the Government should take over the control of the cement works as a remedy. In reply to a question whether it was a fair thing for agricultural instructors to receive larger Salaries than primary school teachers, Mr. Smith stated that his sympathies were with the primary teachers.
