A PAYING PULLET. By Telegraph.-r-Press Association. Christchurch, Last Night. At a meeting of the New Zealand Utility Poultry Club last evening it was reported that a Black Orpington pullet in the club's egg-laying competition had laid 100 eggs in 108 days, tyiereby nearly equalling the world's record for consistent laying. The present world's record of 100 eggs in 107 days was established by a Black Orpington pullet in | an Australian egg laying competition. ' , THE COMING SESSION. Auckland, Last Night. Roferring to the coming session today, the Prime Minister stated that he thought the session would last abou* two months. If this estimate proves correct, it will mean that an active election campaign will probably open at the beginning of November. Though no indication has yet been given oi what legislation may be brought down, it is generally accepted that a lengthy debate will take place on the Address-ln-Reply. DATA FOR WAR HISTORY. Wellington, August C. The Defence Department is taking active steps to secure a collection of material likely to be of value to iuture historians of New Zealand's share in the great war. A records office has been set up here, of which Captain Drew, a journalist with war experience, has been placed in charge. All the public departments, all organisations, religious institutions, and societies which in any way contributed to the successful prosecution of the war are being asked to compile statements for* filing in the records office.
Much valuable information is already in the possession of the Defence Department, and the Minister hopes people who have been asked will recognise the importance of the work from a historical point of view and lend all the assistance in their power. TRENTHAM ART UNION. Wellington, August 0. The winner of the first prize in th« Trentham Scholarship Art Union (valued at £1000) is Mrs. A. G. Green, of Mornington, Wellington; the second (valued at £700) was won by Miss Grace M. Bunker, Washington Valley Road, Nelson. REPATRIATION REPORT. ' Wellington, August 0. The report of the Director of Repatriation shows that the number of returned soldiers now on the department's register is 60,302, including 33,037 who have returned since the begining of the fyear to date.
The Ministerial Board has approved 845 loans, totalling £189,535 to assist discharged soldiers to start in business, and during the past month £70,000 has been actually paid on behalf of soldiers in the way of furniture, tools, business, sustenance, training fees, etc.
The' total number of men at present being trained Tor new trades by the department S3 llSo, and during the month the department secured billets for 978 men who sought assistance. The number of men remaining on the "employment wanted" register on July 20 was 437, being distributed as follows: Auckland 150, Wellington 80, Canterbury 106, Otago 35.
CHARGE OF MANSLAUGHTER. Wellington, August 6. Walter Dell, who drove the taxi which killed Mrs. Green on July 15, has been committed for trial on a charge of manslaughter. ■ ■■■ « GAMING HOUSE KEEPERS FINED. » Dunedin, August 0. At the Police Court, William Pollock was fined £IOO for occupying premises and keeping them as a common gaming house. Joseph Hopcraft was fined £SO for a similar offence. CIVIL SERVICE BONUSES CEASE. Wellington, Last Night. The war bonus pajd to members of the Civil Service during the last three years has ceased, the increase in salary granted under the new scale being regarded officially as including the bonus formerly paid.
