Mails despatched on June 25 arrived in London on August 2. A poll of ratepayers at Blenheim yesterday voted in favor of a loan of £II,OOO for a gravitation water supply and drainage scheme, the proposal being carried by 564 to 206.—Press Association.
It is stated that the railway curtailment has had the effect of causing several bridal couples to modify or abandon their honeymoon trip, as they have been unable to secure the necessary railway permit, the railway officials apparently not deeming >the trip as "essential."
At a meeting of the executive of the New Plymouth Returned Soldiers' Association last night, it was unanimously resolved that this association views with alarm the possibility of Professor von Sedlitz being reappointed to bis former position at Victoria University, feeling that this action on, the part of The University Senate is in direct contravention of the principle of Britain for Britons.
Tliero are at present 8,000,000 carcases of frozen meat in cool store in New Zealand. The Britisli authorities are unable to allocate more than 17,000 tons of insulated space in August, but hope to do more than 30,000 tons in September, and to reduce the quantity of meat in store in New Zealand by December 1 to approximately 108,000 tons. This shows the need for ample storage accommodation in the Dominion. The organiser, Mr. R. Day, reported last night that fifty cars have been promised for the children's peace drive to-day, and, to carry the children in comfort, at least fifty-five cars are required. Car owners who have not already offered their cars arc asked to report to Mr. Day at the Central Fire Station at 1.15 to-day. The Frankley Road cars assemble at 1 p.m., other schools at 1.30. Several donations will be acknowledged later. A crowded meeting at Hamilton, discussed the subjects of the railway restrictions, profiteering, etc. The Government was strongly censured for its failure to meet the position. Mr. Ewen McGregor was the principal speaker. He said that Taupiri coal was suitable for locomotives, and plenty was available to give a full service. The opinion was expressed that there was more behind the position than the coal shortage. A resolution was passed calling upon the Government to resign, owing to its mismanagement in the past five years. The.'railway restrictions are causing much., unemployment in the Hamilton district. , ,<. .■ ■
