SHIPPING PROSPECTS.

AUGUST-SEPTEMBER TONNAGE. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, August 6. In a statement to the press the Hon. P. H, Guthrie said that he had received the following cable from the High Commissioner, dated London, July 30: With reference to my telegram of July 14 and your telegram of July 28, I have further represented the seriousness of the position to the Australian Tonnage Committee. They are unable to allocate more than 17,000 tons during August, but hope to improve on 30,000 tons during September. They informed me that they are working to meet the request contained in the cable from the Wellington Tonnage Committee, namely, to reduce the quantity of meat in store in New Zealand by DecemW 1 to approximately 100,000 tons, The Minister adds that this shows the position to be more hopeful, hut delays due to various causes must be taken into account.
