STRATFORD.

IProm Our Own Correspondent;)' (All communications, letters, etc,, left WHS Hi H. J. Hopkins, bookseller, will receive prompt attention.) August 5. Football, which languished as a sport during the war, has made a good recovery, and something like the old interest and enthusiasm are being shown in the game. At one time it was not uncommon for visiting footballers to be entertained by local clubs, and it is therefore pleasing to note that the Stratford Football Club has decided to entertain at supper the Tukapa team on its visit to Stratford on Thursday.. The match promises to be keenly contested, and a good crowd of spectators may be expected. Mr. J. Pritchard, of the International Harvester Company, who met with an accident about a week ago as a result of his motor car overturning, is still in a critical condition in the Manaia hospital, and cannot be visited even by his most intimate friends.

The morning train from New Plymouth, which is scheduled to reach Stratford about 10 o'clock, did not arrive yesterday till 10.50. The few people who had permits to travel south from Stratford accepted the position with resignation and waited uncomplainingly for the arrival of the train.

Mrs. Schofield, Kiss Sunderland, and Miss Greenhulgh left Stratford yesterday for Auckland, where take the steamer for London. It is their intention to Teside permanently in England. Plans are out for quite a number of new houses in Stratford. A fair proportion are for returned soldiers and they include some very nice buildings. Inability to obtain is delaying building operations, and there will be a lot of lost ground to make up when normal conditions return.

The Borough Council is having BroadWay, from Began Street south, scarified and rolled, a work that had become absolutely necessary. The surface had been worn into a series of potholes, and | the street was very rough to travel over, especially for motor cars. A social was held at Toko Road on Monday night, to bid farewell to Mr. and Mrs. Lucena, who are leaving the district. The guests were presented by Mr. Marfell, on behalf of the residents, With a greenstone paper knife, and Miss Murphy, who has been staying with Mrs Lucena, was presented with a cut-glass silver-topped powder jar F>ongs were given by Messrs Aitken," Sherbourne, and Butler. The music for the dance was supplied by Mrs. Curren and Mr. L. Leydon was M.C. The ladies provided the supper. | Mr. Robert Masters (chairman of the Taranaki Education Board) telegraphed the Minister for Education as follows: •"Anxiously awaiting decision of Cabinet in reference to carriage of children to secondary schools by motor service in this province. Someone has blundered in the Railway Department, and is causing a grave injustice to children who are unable to help themselves. Is the Goveniment going to shelter behind the extra expense that will be incurred, and possibly blight the future of many bright children who may fail and thu/s become beyond the age limit for scholarships." Mr. Hit-nan has replied as follows: "Tour telegram joceived. The subject matter was consmered at a meeting of Cabinet Inst week; but in order that the position throughout the Dominion mielifc be considered, it was decided to obtain a j special report, and the Department is ! now obtaining the necessary particulars. I am giving instructions for the matter to be expedited." POSTED DTRECT FOB 2s (Id. One Good Luck Writing Pad, One Packet Envelopes, One Penholder and Nib, One HB. Lead Pencil.
