THE WHEEL TAX.

STATEMENT BY COUNTY CHAIRMAN. The'formal reply of tho New Plymouth Borough Council to the representations of the faranaki County Council on the question of the erection of toll gates was read at yesterday's meeting of tho County Council, 'and the chairman (Mr. J. S. Connett) remarked (hat the decision had cleared the air somewhat, and the Council and the public now knew how much chance there was of getting toll gates Instead of a wheel tax, notwithstanding many of those who deputatlonlsed the county last month had expressed opinions that toll gates provided a fairer means (If collecting a tax than a vehicles license. Ju spite of all that had been said he did not think any argument had been brought forward which hod shown that the county wos not justified In Its attitude. The Council's duty was to find Immediate relief for Its ratepayers, and that was ,tehy tho attitude taken by the Council was adopted. The Council represented the ratepayers, and its duty was to do the best in the Interests of the ratepayers as a whole. That was what had been done, and if the other bodies would only allow the Council to carry out Its proposition in its own way, it would be found that It would not be detrimental to any section of the community, and its operations would he mode as easy as possible.
