The Peace Celebrations Committee applied for a further payment of £lB5 to meet outstanding accounts, making a total of £285, against which the Council would receive the Government subsidy, and it was anticipated the net cost to the Council would not exceed £l6O. —Tiio amount was authorised. The Fitzroy Ratepayers' Association acknowledged the permission of tha Council to plant trees in Sackville Street, and stated it was intended ta plant twelve oak trees. The Association asked if the Council would make a grant towards purchasing material for protecting the trees. In a discussion which followed it was pointed out that if the Council agreed to the proposal and voted money as suggested, it would commit the Council to a scheme of tree planting on a somewhat disorganised method. It was also pointed out that oaks were not considered suitable for planting in streets. ' The matter was referred to the Streets Sub-Committee with power to act. The same body also wrote asking if the Council would place in position at the intersection of Sackville Street and Devon Line, a board notifying that the school is in the vicinity and asking drivers to drive slowly. It was decided to have the board erected as suggested. Stanley Smith wrote in regard to the widening of Mangorei Road, pointing out that the County Council intended opening the road through to the Junction Road, which would cause it to become a main thoroughfare, and he urged that the Council should secure a strip of land for the purpose of widening- the road at the point mentioned— Received. C. A. Smith wrote in regard to the condition of Cutfield Road and urged that as it was one of the early commitments of the Council it Bbould receive urgent consideration. He also pointed out that there was no light in the street between Powderham and Barrett Street, and asked that consideration be given to that matter also. The engineer reported that* he had tried to get different persons to take up a contract to re-form anil gravel the road, and he had also called for tenders through the press, without result. The work was one of the first to be done when teams were available, but these were scarce, and all that could be got were required for metal and boulder cartage, in order to overtake the leeway. It was decided to forward a copy of the engineer's letter to Mr. Smith and to state that further effort would be made to get the work dope. The matter of the light was referred to the Electric Light Committee. The tender of F. Payne, of £321, was accepted for the erection of a truck garage and charging station, 'at the rear of the sub-station. The secretary of the Municipal Association of New Zealand (Mr. T. F. Martin) notified that a conference of the Association would be held in Wellington on September 10th.
