Shanahan, who U leaving the company's employ to entw iuto business with Mr. R. Morrissey. A London cable states that 'the Rt, | Hon. R. MeKenna, at one time Chancellor of the Exchequer, but who was defeated at tho last election, is retiring from politics. He succeeds the late Sir Edward Holden as chairman of the Loodon City and Midland: Bank. Mr. Thoe. Drake, of Inglewpod, has received word that his son, Trooper Thos. W. Drake, is returning to New Zealand by the H.M.T. Cordoba, which is due to arrive at Wellington on or about August 30. Trooper Drake left with the Bth Reinforcements.

The death occurred at the New Plymoui.li yesterday of Mr. Jonathan Blytli, an old resident of New Plymouth, who for many years was in business as a diaper, but for some yearn past had been living.in retirement. Deceased, who had been a prominent business man in Melbourne, where he suffered considerable financial loss during the land boom, arrived in New Plymouth about 2fl years ago, and commenced business in Devon Street on the site now occupied hy Messrs. S. B. White and Son, who purchased the property on his retirement about flftocn years ago. Ho was a prominent Freemason, and a splendid entertainer. He is survived hy a son (who served on Gallipoli and in France) and two daughters. His wife predeceased him by some years.
