STRATFORD.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) (All communications, letters, etc., left with Mr 11. J. Hopkins, bookseller, will receive prompt attention) Stratford, August 1. Michael Dodunski, an ' old resident, passed away at his residence, Broadway South, on Thursday, at the age of S4 years. For the past nine years the late Mr. Dodunski resided in Stratford, but for 26 years prior to that he was farming at York lload. He leaves a widow and three daughters (Mesdames J. Burkett, J. Fabish, and W. Goodwin) and three sons (Messrs John, Joseph, and Thco Dodunski). One of his sons was killed in action. As a result of the curtailment of the railway service, Mr. S. J. James' wool scouring works at Stratford closed down to-day, throwing seven men out of employment. On Wednesday evening a welcome nomc Bocial was given in the Ngacre Hall to Corporal J. T. Scott and Privates Bliizard, Seabright, and Shuttleworth, each of whom was presented by Mr. J. W*. Morrison, the chairman, on behalf of the residents, with an illuminated address. Music for the dance was played by Mrs. Bianchi and Mr. S. Parker. Extras were played by Mr. T. Walsh, and Mr. P. Burkett acted as M.C. The Aotea and Stratford Hockey Clubs are making full preparations for their annual dance, which is to be held in the Town Hall on Thursday next. Sergeant Dale, who has been very ill during the past fortnight, is reported to be much better and well on the way to recovery. Indications are not wanting that the leaders of the different political parties in Stratford are beginning to assemble their forces in readiness for the coming contest. With a view to learning whether anything had been done up to the present by the Liberals, the president of the Liberal Association was approached_ to-day. He seemed to know something, but was saying nothing. He, however, hinted that within a day or bo a public announcement of some importance may be expected. The public are apparently paying some attention to the request of the Railway Department not to travel excepting on urgent business, and very few passengers boarded the train at Stratford this morning. Even the small amount of carriage accommodation provided was not needed, and one carriage was almost empty. A passenger who had failed to obtain Ins ticket quarter of an hour before the time fixed for the departure of the train was not permitted to travel. The furniture Bale held by Mr. Lamasou on behalf of the Rev. J. D. Madtli was a great success from the vendor's point of view, and prices in some cases soared nbove market rates for new articles of similar kinds. A number of children in Stratford are suffering from swollen glands. The trouble apparently has no serious consequences, provided proper care is exercised and exposure 'to the cold and wet avoided. Two children, left alone while their mother was busily occupied with her household duties, were badly scalded through getting into a receptacle con. taining hot water. They suffered greatly, and had to be taken to the hospital, bht are now doing satisfactorily. » Mr. T. Lamason's woefclv report is as follows: Last Saturday my usual sale was held at the Mart, when" a very good entry of poultry, furniture, sundries.'er.c., came to hand. I quote as follows: Hens 2s 6d to 6s 6d, ducks 3s u'd to 5s Gd, cockerels 2s to ss, potatoes lis cwt., furniture fruit and sundries at usual auction rates. Mr. T. Lamason's usual weekly sale is advertised for Saturday. POSTED DIRECT FOR 2s Cd. One Good Luck Writing Pad, One Packet Envelopes, One Penholder and Nib, One H.B. Lead Pencil.
