SOLDIERS SEEKING WORK. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Auckland, Last Night. arfany returned soldiers in Auckland Sire seeking work. At present there are 330 names on the register of the employment bureau conducted by the Patriotic. Association, and 14S on the register of the Repatriation Board. It is possible that a certa incumber of men have applied to both agencies, but; even if a fair allowance is made for this possibility, the fact remains that a large number of soldiers are without employment. The worst feature of the position is that the idle men are either unskilled or capable of only light work. SCHOOL OOMJVlTttwtwi' \SSOCIATION —h, Last Night. At' a meeting ot the Christchureh School Committee Association the following, resolution was carried: "That in View of the altered conditions of the' traffic generally, the committee recommends the Education Department to introduce a provision in' the syllabus "for teaching children the elementary rules governing safety in the use of the streets and footpaths." The following remits were adopted for the forthcoming conference of School Committees' Associations at Wellington: That the Government be asked to do all in its power to facilitate the holding of open-air classes in connection with schools; tbat with a view to promoting the general efficiency of primary educa tion in the Dominion the Government be urged to increase the annual education grant to at least £3,000,000; that no concessions or subsidies be granted to " anv private schools; that the conference strongly protests against any system of centralisation or other alteration of the Education Act, whereby the prcser-.t functions of school committees will be curtailed; that a federation of School Committees' Associations be formed, to he called the Federate! School- Committees' Associations of New Zealand. (LAND FOR SOLDIERS. Christeliureh, Last Night. - , The Government has purchased 2300 Seres at Lauriston, 800 acres at Rakaia, and 1200 acres at St. Andrews for the purpose of soldier settlement. The land will cut up into twenty sections and is all good cropping and grazing' country. ■ IDuring July the Land. Board dealt with 340 applications by soldiers for land. CROSSING-KEEPERS' GRIEVANCES. Christchureh, Last Night. The Christchureh branch of the Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants is forwarding grievances relative to wages and work of railway crossing keepers to the general secretary of the A.S.R.S. in Wellington for consideration by the executive on Monday, next. It is complained that permanent crossing keepers at Christchureh are sometimes required to work B minimum of CO hours a week, . and a possible maximum of 72 hours a week B.S.A. RESOLUTIONS. Wellington, Last Night. The executive of the Wellington Re-j turned Soldiers' Association passed a resolution strongly objecting to the appointment of any alien to the public or semi-publift positions. The executive decided also to give hearty.support to the Dominion executive in its demand for a commission of inquiry' into the administration end future application of war funds.
