Sir Samuel McCaughoy's bequests include about £400,000 to Sydney University, £200,000 to Brisbane University, £250,000 to the Presbyterian Church in New South Wales and Queensland, and a large sum for widows and orphans of soldiers killed in the war. (The late Sir Samuel McCaughey was probably the richest pastoralist in New South Wales, and it is not surprising that his estate has been declared at one and a half millions Sterling. He was born near Ballymena, Ireland, and arrived in New South Wales in 1850. He did much for the pastoral industry, expending over £30,000 in importing the world's best stud sheep. At North Yanes he constructed upwards of 100 miles of canals, and by means of artificial grasses and crops greatly increased the carrying capacity of the country. He was unmarried. He was called to the Legislative Council in 1899, and was created a knight bachelor in 1905.)
