Mr. Wm. Roy McKean has been appointed a stipendiary magistrate and warden. ~' Messrs J. W. G. Brodie and C. Peacock, of Wellington, are on a short visit to New Plymouth. Mr. Cecil Hawken has been appointed a member of the Licensing Committee of Hawera. Mr. J. J. Campbell, formerly of Kaupokonui and Eltham, now residing at Mangere, Auckland, is on a visit to Taranaki. It is reported that Mr. J. S. Evans, R.M., Nelson, will be transferred to Tinmru, vice Mr. V. 0. Day, SM./who Ims been transferred to Christchurch. Mrs. M. Ricketts, of Manaia, has received advice that her husband. Temp.Captain W. Ricketts, D.C.M., will arrive in New Zealand by the Ulimaro* on or about August 6. Mrs. L. Berry, New Plymouth, has received advice that her son, Pjjvate L. D. Berry, is returning by the Mainari, due in Auckland about the 10th inst. Mr. E. H. Hiley, late General Manager of Railways, has sold his farm in the Manawatu district. Before leaving New Zealand he purchased a property in the Hunterville district, so he may be commg back. At the recent examination for the State Certificate in nursing the four New Plymouth hospital entrants, Nurses Corkill, Greatbatch, Hirst and Lansley passed with distinction, all gaining over 7S per cent. The Rev. John Dawson, president of the New. Zealand Alliance, who has been in America attending a conference of prohibition workers from all parts' of the world, returned on Monday by the Makura. Lieut.-Colonel J. W. Hutchen, 0.M.G., has received an apopintment on the New Zealand Staff. He was a lieutenant of the vifth, Wellington, Regiment when he left with the Expeditionary Fore*. He will return to New Zealand shortly. The death is reported from London of Mr. Adolphus Storey, 8.A., Professor of Perspective at the Royal Academy. Mr. Storey was born in 1834, and had a distinguished career as a painter. He wrote two works on f.rt.
