OAKURA. (From Our Own Correspondent) . ' Tho esteem ln which Mr and Mrs W. D. Linn are held throughout the district was evidenced by the large and representative gathering of settlers of both districts that assembled In the Oakura Hall on Wednesday evening, when the settlers of the Onkura and Tataralmaka districts tendered them a farewell social on the eve of their departure from the district In which they have resided for the pa-t eleven years. During the whole of that period Mr Linn had always assisted in any movement for the improvement of the district, whilst Mrs Linn and family have taken a prominent part In all social matters, and also during the war period In patriotic matters, so that as soon f.s It became known that they had sold out and were leaving the district, a strong committee, with Mr W. J. Honeyflcld as chairman, and Mr E L. Hughes as sectetary, was formed to make Ihe necessary arrangements in order to give them a fitting farewell, mid they did their work well, and the fact is questionable If a more successful function has ever been held In Oakura. A splendid musical progromme was rendered, the performers, as they deserved, receiving an appreciative hearing A feature of the evening was the singing of Mr N. Day, who was in fine voice, and his rendering,,of. "The Call of the Wild" and "Clod Sond joil "back lo Me" evoked undeniable encores, to which he responded with "Little Mary Fawcett" and ''Come,. For 'Tis June," and u.ictlier New Plymouth item was a recitation of "Lasca," by Mr Goldsworthy. Mr A. Smtth'B "Humor- • logues" also received sn omtlon • tlktito and local' performers. who. assisted in providing a merltous-performance;—Songs: "A Farewell," Mr.T. C. Street (Okato); "The Sunshhje. of Your Smiie," Mr J. Donolly (Oltato); "SYhen lYou go Home," Mrs Morris; trio: "The Little Farm," Messrs Pearson, Willis and Donelly; comic, songs: Mr W. Willis (encored). , Mr Pearson played the accompaniments sympathetically. Tho musical Items were Interspersed with dances, Messrs F. Miice-and' R. Hpnoyfleld as M.'sC. keeping matters merrily moving to excellent mUStc'provided by Mr Pearson,: extras being played by Misses Corbett, Periraon, Mrs Morris, Messrs Donelly and A. Smith. 1 !. On behalf of the settlers, of the disj ,trict he' wished them God speed, . health and prosperity In their new home, and then amidst the singing of "For They are Jolly Good Fellows" presented Mrs Linn with a travelling rug and Mr Linn with a pocket wallet. Mossrs C. Androws (Okato) and Hickman Russell also made eulogistic remarks. Mr Linn, who was enthusiastically received, briefly returned thanks, stating that he felt sorry at parting from old friends and whom he would also welcome in his new homo. After the singing of "Old Lang Syne'll dancing was rosumed and kept up with vigor until tho early s«ucs.
