DAIRY COMPANIES

JIELLS COAIPANY. The annual meeting of tho Molls Co-opera-tive Dairy Factory Company, Ltd., was held at Mokoia, on Tuesday afternoon. There were about 25 shareholders present, and Mr C. J. Hawken, chairman of directors, presided. The twenty-first annual report stated, inter alia: The directors have pleasure in congratulating the shareholders on the most successful year yet experienced by the company. As you know, the Imperial Government has agreed to take our cheese for two soasonf from July, 1918, at 10% d per lb, an advance of a£<J per lb on the previous contract price. Wo regret the loss of several directors, who have left the district, viz., Mossrs K. S. Hayblttle and T. H. Prowse, and Mr Tidswoll Is also leaving shortly. The directors to retire by rotation are Messrs Hawken and Prowse, and Mr Hawken is eligible for ie-electlon. The services of I our manager, Mr D. Campbell, have been retained for the coming season, also for Mr Scott, branch manager. I The following statistics were attached to the j report: Cheeser-Pounds of milk, 8,167,992; pounds of butter-fat, 316,403.54; cheese made, , 875 toijs 15 cwt Oqr 21b,.pounds of milk to lib | cheese, 9.70; pounds of cheese from lib butterfat, 2.66; average test, 3.87; cost of manufacture, 1.29 d; cost of manufacture (including depreciation), 1.41 d; cost per lb, f.o.b. l.C4d. Butter—Pounds of milk, 96,190; pounds of but-ter-fat, 4169.31; butter mnde, creamery and whey, 8 tons 14 cwt lqr 171b. The chairman, in formally moving the adoption of the report and balance-sheet, congratu- | lated the shareholders and suppliers on the best season experienced by the company. As shareholders would notice by the balance-sheet, this was the twenty-first birthday of tho com- ' pany, and if they had a few more successful Beasons as they had during the past six years they would soon be In clover. The pay-out for the past season was remarkably good; already Is 9d had been paid out, with a further 2y 8 d y«t to bo paid, which would bring the total for the season to Is 11%. This.would bring their pay-out pretty close' to the best of the factories. The incroase In the output was ?6 tons, certainly not very large, but It had to bo remembered that they had only small Supplies, and they would therefore have to Increase their suppliers. The total amount of cheese snt forward for export was 5215 cases, and the balance in store at Juno 30 was 3077 cases. Only 47 cases of second-grade cheese were made during the season, which was very satisfactory, and he doubted whether any other company could havo a better rocord. The manager and his staff.were to be congratulated upon their excellent work. He regretted thnt tho company was losing the services of several of their directors, and their places would bo hard to fill. With the exception of two the board of directors would be practically- a new ono. A new team could hardly be expected to have the same expert knowledge of the company, but he was sure they would all do their best in the interests of tho shareholders. . Mr P. Campbell seconded tho motion for the adoption of the report, which was carried after a brief discussion. The following were elected to the hoard of directors: Messrs C. J. Hawken, T. E. Bickford, J. A. Gulliver, H. Shrimpton, and A. B. Catchpolo. Mr Cotchpole gave notice to move at the next annual meeting that the company on)y pay Interest on the capital of suppliers. He said that many shareholders who were leaving the factory did not feol disposed to accept the 10s, but were leaving their shares In with the hope of securing 16s. In reply to a question, the chairman said the company wanted all the veils they could get, and the same prices would be glvon as last year. Mr Murch enquired whether the company bad received any rennet from the local company. The manager (Mr Campbell) replied that some had been obtained, and It was very satisfactory, being equal to the foreign rennet. In reply to a shareholder, the manager further stated that ho was ready to open tho factory at any time. TESTING OP HERDS. There was a short discussion in regard to the value of herd-testing associations, and the concensus of opinion was that it was an excellent thing if thoroughly carried out. The manager said ho understood the Government were going fully Into this matter, and the trouble In the past, It seems, was that tho Government had not sufficient men to carry out the testing everywhere, Personally he was quite prepared to do what he could in the way of testing. The chairman,, considered the only way tin testing could be properly harried out w.is by an arrangement with other companies In the district. Mr James said the chairman's suggestion for the factories to combine was a very sound proposition, as each factory would then pay its share of the cost pro rata. After some further discussion It was moved by Mr Catchpole that the following be a committee to go into the question: Messrs Shrimpton, James, Davis, the mover and the manager, Mr Blckford seconded the motion, which was carried. COTTAGES FOR EMPLOYERS. The advisableness of erecting cottages for employees, so as to induce married mon to settle :In their employment, was brought forward. The chairman considered they should have built two or threo cottages three or four years- ago. Mr Murch moved that it be a recommendation to the directors to build cottages at eacli of the factories.—Carried. ' ' ~ At a meeting of directors subsequently, Mr Hawken was re-elected chalrman.—Star.
