THE OPUNAKE LINE.
In a letter to Mr- C. A. Wilkinson, the Member for Egmont, Sir William Fraser, says it is his intention to again recommend Cabinet to authorise the Qontinuatipn of the Qpunake line to Now Plymouth. This is in pursuance of a promise he has repeatedly made. The Minister says lie would like the work to be completed as early as possible, but fears that it would not .be practicable to take men from other work and send them to New Plymouth. No one has, as far as we know, asked him to do that. He'complains about the shortage of men in connection with the Ti> Roti-Opunake line, but has the Department made any wliole-lieartqd efl'ort to secure the necessary labor? We are not aware of any such attempt, Aa a matter of fact, there is more labor available in Taranaki to-day than there has been for several years, mainly because of the railway dislocation and the consequent slackening and shutting down of several industries. As Mr. Wilkinson, in his letter to the Minister, points out, this is an excellent district for men to work in; being easy of access and closely settled, and, if he goes the right way to' wort and offers the market wages, the Minister will get all the labor he requires.
