HARDSHIP ON SOLDIERS.
DEMANDS OF ADVANCES TO SETTLERS OFFICE. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. At a meeting of thS Wellington War Relief Association to-day a letter was read from the South Canterbury. Relief Society stating that it had, within the last month, three cases in which the Government Advances to Settlers Office had written demanding payment of arrears of principal which accrued during soldiers* absence on service. An opinion wan expressed in the letter that In almost every ease the whole of the military pay and allowances had been ÜBed In the maintenance of dependents, and that the Advances to Settlers Office should capitalise these amounts and allow them to be paid at the end of the ordinary period of repayment of the mortgage. The chairman said that similar eases had occurred in WeHingtbb. It was decided to endorse the action taken by the Timaru society, and that the Minister of finance should be written to urging amended legislation to meet such cases.
