of £2 2s made against returned soldiers for each valuation of properties it was desired to purchase. It was stated that one soldier had required iive valuations, and had to pay a total of ten guineas. The amount was considered too high, but no resolution was passed. Dawson Madill, who, after having been minister in charge of the Presbyterian Church at iStratrord for three years, lias resigned, was, with Mrs. Madill and his family, the guest of ths members and adherents of the church at a social in St. Andrew's Hall on Tuesday evening. Cray (Hawera), and a number of leading townspeople. The ball was much overcrowded, and this, with the tenor of the addresses and the character of the whole of the proceedings, showed that there was deep and genuine regret at the departure of Mr. Madill and his family. Dr. Stevens, th« session clerk, presided, and an enjoyable programme of songs and other items, interspersed with short addresses and terminating with supper, was given. Dr. Stevens, after paying a handsome tribute to the work of the Rev. Addresses were also given by the Revs. Boyd, 0. Blundell, R. B. Tinsley, and H. B. Gray, and Messrs Wickliam, McK. Morison, Boyd and Ireland, and Adjutant Mcßoberts. Mr. Madill said he was delighted to know lie was leaving a harmonious people who were loyal to the church, to him and Mrs. Madill, and to each other. He acknowledged the great kindness he had received in many honjes.. He was leaving his old friends and he was going out like Abraham, he knew not where, but lie had every confidence in God and could leave the future with him. The Stratford people he would always remember in the kindest possible way. Songs were sung by Messrs A. D. Bills adn Meuli, and Mrs. Bryce, a duet by Messrs Meuli, and a recitation was given by Mrs. Pettigrew. On Tuesday afternoon Mrs. Madill was the guest of the P.W.M.U..
