THE POPE'S OVERTURES, M. RIBOT'S VERSION. By Telegraph —Press Assn.—Copyright. Received July 20, 7.35 p.m. Paris, July 28. M. Ribot, interviewed, stated that the Pope, at the beginning of August, P. 117, submitted proposals as a basis of overtures to Germany, which Britain and France declined, Britain declaring that tho proposals did not contain sufficient guarantees regarding Belgium. The Vatican telegraphed to Germany this reply, and suggested tlie commencement of conversations regarding the matter, but Britain put an end to the movement immediately. Herr Er;.berger's statement was a distortion of the truth. M. Ribot added that he had advijed Britain not to allow herself to be drawn into conversations. —Aus. N.Z. Cable Association.
