ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES.
SUDDEN DEATH IN THE STREET. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Dunodin, Last Night. A returned soldier named (leo. Thomas McCleery, a Main Uody man who returned to New Zealand three weeks ago, died suddenly this atrernoon while walking from the Normanby tram terminus to Port Chalmers. Deceased had proceeded only about 200 yards from the ear when he collapsed, expiring in a few seconds., INQUEST ON VICTIMS OP FIRE. ' Dunodin, Xaat Night. An inquest was opened this afternoon on the bodies of Duncan McDonnell and Samuel Doherty, victims of the Are in Uargill Street on Sunday morning. The evidence showed that there were thirteen boar.ders, mostly seamen, in the house, besides eight members of the household The fire was discovered in a ro.oin occupied by Doherty, and had n good hold. The house was not licensed as a boardinghouse.
Medical evidence showed that both men were badly burned. In the hospital on Sunday morning Doherty admitted to being three parts drunk. When the alarm was given a man named Clarke found Doherty lying on his bed with all his clothes on, and woke him up. On arrival at the house the superintendent of the brigade was informed that everybody was out except the proprietress, who was in the kitchen, but on going upstairs subsequently he found Doherty. McDonnell's body was found shortly afterwards.
Doherty informed the police on Sunday that, ho got out of the room, but went back to get his money. The inquest was adjourned till Wednesday, the coroner stating that, he wanted to look into the by-laws and consider the 'whole matter further. ,
