NEW PLYMOUTH CITIZENS' BAND.

To the Editor.

Sir,—We desire to secure your valuable assistance again this year to bring before residents, both In town and country, the necessity for enrolling .as yearly subscribers to the New Plymouth Citizens' Band. The regular subscribers are really our "backbone," and we would like to see substantial additions made to the list this year, so that the band may bo maintained by the Citizens' Committee at a high standard. We have to thank a great many people In and around New Plymouth for their faithful help and cooperation during the trying "war period," and would also point out that our responsibilities are increasing each year, not so much as regards the salaries as the maintaining of the band with instruments, uniforms, and necessary equipment. During the last two years the "learners" have been supplied with old and second-hand Instruments, of a very inferior order, In fact, this was the only class of Instrument our committee could obtain, Snd we have to thank those persons who donated some of these, old and all as they might have been, as they enabled us to make some of the players who are now playIns regularly in the senior ranks creditable musicians in a very short period. These old instruments (or n good many of them) are getting beyond satisfactory service, but efforts are made to allow of them being used by resorting to the "solder bar and Iron," but the days of many are nlimbered, and this is ofie of the worries of out' committee. Help of a financial nature Is absolutely necessary, If we are to maintain the band at the standard It has now attained. In a good many instances new Instruments will have to be found for those of ottr bandsmen who have re'urned from the front, and are llkoly to settle down amongst its again, and we confidently make this appeal, and would urge all interested In the fnnvirdln? of our town mttslcallv atifl in the musical education of our tenths, tn hand In, their subscriptions to Mr Cnttley (secretarv), Mr Em Sole (at Role Bros.), or to Mt M'Leoil (tlie conductor). This appeal has been purposely delayed owing to several charltablo appeals locally of late, hut wo trust the result will be encourao'ng to the Citizens' Committee.—We I are, Sir for the committee. E. ,1. 301,15, Chairman. B. n. CATTT,I!T, Secretary.
