RETURN OP MEN FROM BOCTT, By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night.' ' News of the departure front Egypt of the New Zealand troops who have been on service in that theatre has bean received by the Defence Department aa follows: The steamship Klleng* left Suez on July 23 with 1105 troops and 11 women and children. The vessel is due to reach the Dominion about August 28. This draft practically completes the return of men from Egypt, those now remaining there comprising three officer* and about 17 other rank*. The Port Hacking, which was ached' uled to reach Lyttelfcon on August 14, has reported at Colon, and her date of arrival at the southern port i» fat down for August lit. ' THE HARDSHIPS 07 TENANT*. Ohristchurch, Last Night. In the Magistrate's Court to-day the owners sued the tenant for sion of a property of &% acre*' at BJP Martin's. One of the owners aaid he had sold the property and bad given the defendant notice to qtuVas torn Just 1. Efforts had been wade to obtain another house for defendant. The nan who had bought the property (a boarding-house keeper) said he had found a difficulty in obtaining adequate milk and vegetable supply for nil boarding-house, and had bought the property as a source of supply. The delay in obtaining possession had been a great inconvenience and no little lota to him, ' Counsel for defendant submitted that the property occupied by defendant! came under the definition of a dwellinghouse, and that the land was accaupry to it. Defendant had seven young children, and found it very difficult to find another house suitable for their occupation. • Defendant said his wife bad been born in the house, and they had lived there a very long time. He had applied every- • where and had been unable to. get Another suitable dwelling, \ Plaintiff was granted an order ior possession within seven day*. A CABLE MESSAGE CORRECTED. Wellington, Last Night ' On July 4 there appeared a cable in the New Zealand press originating from a Pans, dealing with the convention under f which the Imperial, Australian, and New Zealand Governments are to take over the interests of the Pacific Phosphate Co., which, up to the present, has worked the deposits at Nauru Island. Into the cable an error crept during transmission, and tho message read: "The company holds little that the war did not invalidate." The cablo as it was originally lodged, and should have read but for the mutilation in transit, stated: "The compauy holds a'title which the war did not invalidate." A JUST DECISION. Wellington, Last Night, Mr; J. P. Luke, M.P., has received a communication from Mr. McVilly, general manager of railways, stating that the employees of the Railway Etfbortment who we're absent from their duties during the influenza epidemic for the purpose of nursing their own families or others, or acting as voluntary workers, will receive full pay for the time lost. AN OPIUM SMUGGLER CAUGHT. Auckland, Last Night. A young Chinaman named Ah Fook, who is a member of the crew of the ship Kuplcctela and had been caught coming off the ship on Friday with a iuepteiows looking vial concealed in liin clothe*. came before Mr. Wilson, S.M., to-day on a charge of having in hu possession J opium u» a form suitable for smoking Nc- smoke cigarettes; no smoke at all" declared the Celestial lad, who spoke flSii* /airly fluently. He further that the stuff that was found on him was a mixture of treacle and sugar with a little opium in it, which fir had bought in Shanghai and used as a toothache cure, and it was no good for opium smoking. Tho collector of customs stated that, in his opinion, tho stuff in the little jar found on Ah Fook was pure opium being about two ounces. When the ship was searched after this youth had been .caught with the opium, there were 1«0 small tubes of opium, malting about a pound altogether of the drug found,««
