PUBLIC NOTICES. t ; : ■ VEW Q.OVERNMENT i -RAILWAYS. COAL-SAVING TIMETABLE. Do not travel by rail unless your journey is imperative and for essential- purposes. Stop travelling for pleasure! By staying home you can help us j to save coal, which can be utilised to convey essential goods traffic. Stay home and consider! j* -A saving'%f the haulage of. one railway passenger ear will enable 10 tons of essential goods to be conveyed by rail. A reduction of six passenger cars makes room for the conveyance of 100 tons of essential goods by train. The conveyance by railway of supplies for essential industries, such as dairy factories, sawmills, etc., is necessary to keep the industries going. The conveyance to the markets of the products of essential industries of the Dominion is of vital importance to the whole community, whether producers or consumers. Tens of thousands of workers are dependent for their livelihood on sawmills, factories, and manufactories continuing their operations at the present timeIt ■is incumbent on you to do, your part in assisting to maintain the industries, and, by every means in your power, to help to obviate unemployment. Therefore stay at home and make room on the trains for the carriage of essential goods. Prom and after Friday, August 1,1919, every person desirous of travelling by rail beyond the limits of the suburban area will require to satisfy the railway officer that the journey is imperative and being undertaken for essential business purposes, the bona fides of which the railway officer shall determine. ► No person will be booked or permitted to join any train for travel beyond the suburban area unless and until the railway authorities are satisfied as to the bona fides of the circumstances and that the journey is necessary. Single tickets only will be issued. No ticket will be issued within 15 minutes of the time of the departure of the train. No person, except passengers who are in possession of tickets wiil be permitted to enter, on to the platform. The number of carriages to bo run on any train will be Btrictly limited. Persons who desire to travel are recommended to apply to the railway authority, the day before (hat on which they propose to make the journey. Tickets will, in all cases, be issued subject to there being room on the train. No undertaking, implied or otherwise, can be given to furry any passenger by any particular train or oil any particular date. Passengers who aie unable to travel on any one day will, as far as possible, be. taken in turn on subsequent dates, but no guarantee can be given as to .the interval that may necessarily elapse before the accommodation can be provided. Any persons who purchase tickets for journeys which they are unable to undertake owing to lack of train accommodation may obtain a refund of their fares on presenting the ticket to the office of issue. The restrictions on passenger traffic are being imposed solely for the purpose of conserving coal and to provide, as far as possible, for the conveyance of essential goods traffic which cannot be dealt with under the existing arrangements, owing to the large number of passengers who have continued to travel since "the coal-saving timetable was inaugurated on July 2, 1919. Investigation has shown that nearlv 50 per cent, of" the passengers at the present time travelling by train consists of women and children.
