BOOKMAKER FINED. By Telegraph.—Pj-ess Association. Timaru, July 24. At .the Magistrate's Court Ch'arles Newman was fined £2O for frequenting a public place for the purpose of betting. TRIBUTE TO NELSON SCIENTISTS. Nelson, July 24. In the course of the annual Cawthron lecture Dr. Cockayne paid a glowing tribute to Nelson scientists. He referred .to the work done long ago by Sir David Monro, Messrs W. L. Travers, and Sinclair, who was drowned while conducting research' work in the Rangitata River. Coming to the present time, he described Miss Winifred Betts as the most brilliant woman scientist in New Zealand, while Sir Ernest Rutherford (an old boy of Nelson College) ranked with Sir Isaac Newton. The Rev. Dr. John Holloway, of Hokitika, wlio was one of the ten leading botanists; in the world, was also a Nelson boy. Dr. Cockayne spoke of the part Nelson ought to play in the botanical world, and, with the assistance of the Cawthron Institute, Nelson ought to be facile princeps in botany, which a most important science for a great farming community like New Zealand.

ESCAPED PRISONER SENTENCED. Wellington, July vi. Lawrence John Malonev, a prisoner undergoing a sentence of two years for breakin gaiid entering, who escaped from hospital on July 14 and was recaptured on the 17th, was sentenced by the court to-day to six months' additional imprisonment on the charge of having escaped from lawful custody. LORD LIVERPOOL AT NAPIER. Napier, July 24. The Tutanekai, with the GovernorGeneral, arrived at Napier shortly af.ter eleven o'clock. Hig Excellency was presented with an illuminated address at a civic reception at the Municipal Theatre, and afterwards entertained at lunch by .the Mayor and councillors. He leaves on the Tutanekai -about three o'clock for Wellington. "

William Spriggins, about 35 years of age, who said he was a recent arrival from .the North Island, was arrested on breaking and entering, who escaped from Broß' store at Dunsandel. Accused was discovered by the owners at three in the morning in the store. He effected an entrance by forcing the door. REPAIRS TO EASTERN CABLE. Wellington, Last Night. The Eastern Extension Company has received advice to expect that the MaltaAlexandria cable will be repaired within ten days, and the full traffic by this route will then be restored. INCREASE IN CHARITABLE AID. Wellington, Last Night. At a meeting of the Wellington Hospital Board to-day the charitable aid committee reported that the tendency of charitable aid this year was towards a very considerable increase, both in the number of beneficiaries and the extent of assistance offered in individual cases. HOSPITAL BOARD'S FINANCES. Wellington, Last Night. The Wellington Hospital Board decided to-day to empower tho chairman and secretary to arrange for an overdraft at the bank up to £IO,OOO to meet unestimated expenditure in connection with the epidemic, to pay levies, and enable the board to meet liabilities on account of widows' pensions incurred through»the epidemic. It was stated that the overdraft should not be required for more than three or four months.

BANK OFFICERS' GUILD, Wellington, Last Night. At a large meeting of bank officers tonight it was decided to form a New Zealand Bank Officers' Guild, and a provisional committee was set up.
