DISTRICT NEWS.

PUNGAREHU. iFrom Our Own Correspondent) A very enjoyable evening was spent in the Pungarehu public hall on Tuesday, July 15th., when the residents of Pungarohu and a few visitors, including Mr and Mrs Hayden from Wanganui, gathered to bid farewell to "Mr and Mrs T. Harvey, who are leaving the district for their new homo at New Plymouth. On account of the weather being so unfavorable the attendance was hardly up to expectations, although those present were given the time of their lives, dancing being the main amusement, which made the time pass merrily, all enjoying themselves to their hearts content. The chairman (Mr F. J. Campbell) and all the committee are to be complimented on the splendid arrangements on such short notice. Mr Hayden sprung a surprise upon the company present by offering two prizes, one of 7/6 and another of 2/6, to go to the best first and second waltzing couples, the only conditions at' tached thereto being ■ that only four couples take the floor at the one time. Mr Hayden, who acted as judge, awarded the first prize to Miss M. Gibson and Mr H. Gilhooly, Miss M. Morrow and Mr. A, Gilhooly coming second. During the evening Mr M. Fleming, on behalf of the Pungarehu residents, presented Mr. and Mrs Harvey with a set of military hair brushes, a suede pocket book and a silver tea-pot respectively. The speaker referred to the long and valuable services rendered the district by Mr and Mrs Harvey. Mr Harvey having been a member of the school committee for the last 36 years, and Interested himself in all matters associated with the advancement of the Egmont County, having been a member of that body for a great number of years. He was also a director of the local dairy factory, In which he took a great Interest, and said he felt sure all present would be sorry to lose them. Other speakers were Messrs F. J. Campbell and E Taylor. Mr Harvey, in returning thanks, said that though removing to New Plymouth they would always take a groat deal of interest in the progress of the district that had ifor so many years been their home, and he hoped that Its prosperity would continue to increase as time went on. Ho thanked the residents most heartily for the handsome presents and for all the nice things that had been said that night. What he had done in his stay here was all done as a part of his duty as a settler, and he hoped that the goodwill and harmony that prevailed amongst the settlers here would still continue in the years to come. The company then sang "For They are Jolly Good FeUows'" and "Auld Lang Syne, after which supper was handed round Dancing, which had occupied the earlier hours of the night, was again vigorously resumed, and kept up til ■ the small hours of Wednesday morning. The music was supplied by Mrs Pope, who acQultted herself most creditably at the piano. Mr T. Barrett made a most efficient M.C. The clearing sale conducted by Mr Newton King a stuff, on account of Mr T Harvey at the farm. Lower Parlhaka Bond, on Tuesday/! liith 111st., whs distinctly successful. The day was most suitable, and the attendance was large, bidding keen and good prices were realised. It was noticeable that ail the farm Implements, furniture, etc,, offered were In eood order, and the live slock showed that they had been well looked after. The sale was successful .rom eviry point of view, everything going at satisfactory prices. Thero are whispers that Mr Jack Barrett will be joining the benedicts in the near future. The ladies class, which was formed in Pungarehu some little time ago to receive in structlons In first aid, lias to all appearances fallen flat This Is unfortunate, as I is « very desirable thing that there should be persons amongst us able and willing l 0 give first aid, take tempera lures, etc. I have no doubt whatever that tf this matter is again taken up there is every probability that a large class will attend for instruction. Agitation Is pretty keen around here just now on the ' introduction of the telephone system throughout the district. No doubt it would be a great boon to the settlers, the rtiajorl y of who are very anxious to have the telephone Installed. Several requests have been forwarded to the Department on the question but so far there is nothing doing It is tn hn hoped we shall hear of Something beta* £ finitely done in this respect In the near future Mi H. Campbell, I understand, has taken over 2jo acres of good land out Warea way It is his intention to start dealing in sto ck again being engaged In that line before going to the venture hlni 6Very 3Ucce3S ln his Another welcome homo function is Impendlnr as several well known Pungarehu boys are expected back shortly, ex A start has been mado towards Improving the house recently occcuplcd by Mrs H o„„di„ After Improvements arc completed, which Is expected to last for some weeks, the house will be taken over by the new manager, Mr W Mc Kenna, who lias now arrived In the district and taken over his duties. • ana Mr P.
