RICCARTON FIRE INQUIRY. Christchurch, Last Night. An inquiry was held to-day by Mr. Bailey, S.M., into the circumstances surrounding the fire on the Riccarton racecourse on July 3, by which the members' stand was Evidence was given by 4 the discoverer of the fire and those working in the building that day that everything was perfectly safe up till 10 p.m. The workmen engaged in installing two electric points in the GovernorGeneral's room, the spot at which the fire was thought to have originated, deposed that they were not working with live wires, and that the current had not been turned on that day. Expert electrical engineers agreed that, from an inspection of the main distributing switch after the fire, they were of opinion that the switch could not possibly have been turned on at the time. In giving his decision, Mr. Bailey said that the fire originated in the centre of the front of the building, but there was no evidence to show how it originated. The evidence negatived any suggestion of faulty electrical installation, and he was of opinion that the firo did not originate from that cause.
