.from our own Territorial Regiments in New Zealand, and second to none among the nfantry units was the Wellington Regiment (writes Lieut.-Colonel. Cunningham, D:S.O., in. the Wauganui 1 .Chronicle). The splendid record which ■it holds in the war, the sturdy regimental spirit it always maintained, are' almost entirely traceable to the'influence of one man. That man was the late liieuKColonel ■]& ;g. Mal»ne, the
first commanding officer of the regiment, who fell in action on ,the heights of Chumik Bair on August S, 1915. Throughout the training period in New Zealand in August and September, 1914, and again in Egypt, his untiring energy , and sturdy determination so tilled all ranks with zeal to excel .that it soon became a regimental tradition that the Wellington Regiment must always do •just a bit betjfcer phw theothers. have been a. succession of commanding officers in the regiment, nearly all of whom received their early training under Malone, and they carefully preserved and fostered the spirit of those early days.
