Mr. R. Day, Borough Inspector, leaves this week on a holiday trip to Auckland.

Mrs. T. Walsh, Courtenay Street, has received advice that her son, Private L. Walsh, is returning on August 2. Sir Douglas Haig was {seized with sudden illness shortly after the procession on Victory Day, and was driven home.

Sergeant 0. D. MeAllum, of New Plymouth, who has been on active service for the past 2j years, returned Home on Saturday evening. A Paris cablegram reports that General Allenby has been appointed Com-mander-in-Chief of the Allied Armies of Occupation. Mrs. E. M. Smith has received word that her son, I'te. H. M. (Bert) Smith, of the fiai]\veiy Department, is returning to New Zealand by the Geissen, which is due on August 2nd. Mr. H. Linn, of Fitzruy, has received advice that his son, Sergt. Bernard Linn, who left with the 10th Reinforcements, is returning to New Zealand by the Uliraaroa on August 6th.

Mr. J. Hobbs, of Hawera, who went for a trip to the Islands, returned last week. His many friends throughout the district, wilj, be glad to hear that lie has returned considerably stronger for the change. ■ Mr. R. M. C. J. Laurent, of Hawera, grand-father of Lieut Laurent, V.C., died at Hawera yesterday morning. He < served as an officer in the French army before coming to New Zealand. i

Mrs. B. Gadenne has received word that her husband, Rifleman A. G. Gadenne, is returning to New Zealand by the Giessen, due in Wellington on August 2.

At Moawhango (near Taihape) on Saturday the marriage took place of Miss Amy Batley to Mr. Maurice Chambers, son of Mr. Mason Chambers, of Havelock North, Hawke's Bay. Mr. Noel Wilson, son of Sir James Wilson, of Bulls, was quail shooting on Saturday when a shot glanced off a stump and entered his_ eye. The injury is of a grave nature, and the patient has been taken to Wellington for treatment.

The remains of tlie late Mrs. E. Coleman, the wife of Mr. Wm. C. Coleman, of Wallace _ Place, and the (laughter of the late Theo. and Ann Williams, of VTstlafera; South Wales, were interred at Te Henni cemetery yesterday. The Dominion says a move' is being made to re-appoint Professor von Zedlite to the chair of Modern Languages in Victoria College from which he was removed by- the war legislation. Tlio vacancy was never filled, and his friends on the council are seeking to reinstate liim.—Press Association. Mr. Norman R. Fisher, A.0.5.M., B.E. (Min.) son of Mr. T. R Fisher, of St. Clair, Dunedin, has accepted the general management of thp Jacobs Asbestos Mining Company, Ontario. This company produces from its properties about 45,000 tons of mineral a month, and is one of the largest mines in Canada. The death occurred suddenly at Wangamii on Saturday afternoon of Mr. Jf. Andrew, editor of the Rangitikei Advocate at Marton. Mr. Andrew was visiting his nephew's place at Gonville. He complained of feeling unwell, and [before. medical aid was available ho died. Mr. Andrew was 0(1 years of age, and had been in indifferent heaith.

The fifth Marsdcn aspirant for Parliamentary, honors is Mr. St. Clair Joun< neaux, farmer, of Kamo Springs. He is a member of the provincial and Dominion Executives/of the New Zealand Farmers' Union, and proclaims his policy "in the interests of the producer and the welfare of the Dominion." Mr. Jounneaux was formerly a resident of the Lower Hutt, and subsequently took up land in the Mannwatn, He was, in his day, a noted cricketer.
