VISIT TO THE ISLANDS.
GOVERNOR'S TRIP AND COAL CONSUMPTION. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, July 18. In reference to statements made tliat the Tutanekai with the Governor-Gen-eral and party is burning a lot of coal which could liavo been used in New Zealand, Sir Francis Bell states that the whole question was considered before the trip was arranged. It was ascertained that the American Government had agreed to coal the vessel in American Samoa, The Fiji Government would be able to supply coal at Suva for the return voyage and that there was sufficient coal at Rarotonga available for the voyage from Rarotouga to American Samoa. only question was whether the New Ze.aland Government could provide coal for the voyage from Auckland tp Rarotonga. It- was considered that, as the trip was at the express desire of the Imperial Government, the small amount of coal should not be refused. At the time the decision was reached the coal shortage was not so immediately acute.
