Word has been received that Rifleman W. Smith, Bon of Mrs R. Smith, Gill Street, New Plymouth, is returning by the Briton.
Mr. James Macintosh, of Messrs. Wright, Stephenson, and Co., Wellington, has found it necessary to undergo treatment at a private hospital in Sydney. Information received in Wellington regarding his condition of health . : s far from reassuring. Mr. T. W. McEweu has received notice that his son, Pte. P. (J. (Joe) McEwen, and his pon-in-law, Pte. H. W. Young, are returning by the Geisseu, which arrives in Wellington about August 2. Major (temporary Lieut.-Colone'.l R.O. Chesuey has been appointed coast defence commander of the Auckland Military Distriot. He is _fo retain the rank of Lieut.-Colonel until further notice. Among t]ie troops who returned to Auckland by the Marama, was SecondLieut. R. S. Judson, V.&j D.C.M., and MM. Lieut. Judson is li married man with four children, and gained all his decorations in one month, Ht> will be tendered a civic reception to-day.—Press Association.
After a prolonged illness, tlio death of Mr. Kicimrd Bellringer occurred at tlie New Plymouth Hospital yesterday. For many years he was engaged on the painting staff of his late father and Bellringers' Ltd., and has been a member of the Fitzroy Fire Brigade since its inception, for several years acting as secretary. He leaves a widow and daughter, and great sympathy ig felt for them in their loss. N ~v , ,,
