A IJEPER PATIENT. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Grevmouth, July 17. Some months ago a ease of leprosy was reported at Blackball. Since then nothing has been done to remove the patient to Quail Island. The patient and an attendant are confined in a small hut. Great indignation is expressed at the laxity of the health authorities in not making arrangements for the patient's removal. THE BUTTER SHORTAGE. Palmerston North, Jul? 17. In common with other places the butter shortage has become acute in Palmerston North. The secretary of the local dairy union states that there is absolutely no stocks of good butter, and only five tons of whey butter. The stocks in the hands of retailers are small and the indications are that there will 'be no supplies for about three weeks, when the new season should commence. SAWMILLS MAY CLOSE DOWN. Taihape, July 17. A large gathering of saw millers was held here yesterday to discuss the dislocation of the raijvav service and the shippage of timber traffic. The millers arc carrying on under the most adverse circumstance in the hope of some immediate relief. If there is no definite prospect of this within the next week or two they will be compelled to give notipe to all of their intention to close down, as they cannot go on stacking up timber indefinitely. A PRISONER RECAPTURED. Wellington, Last Night. Lawrence John Maloney, the prisoner who escaped on Monday last, was recaptured in the street at Newtown, thlp morning by a policeman who knew him. Recognition was mutual, and Maloney had a good run before being recaptured. The escapee, who was just out of hospital, was miserably coil and tangry. THE FEATJIERSTON SCiNDAL. Opotiki, Yesterday. Secretary of the Returned Soldiers' Association, replying to the toast, "Our Guests," said the enquiry into the Fcntherston tubercular hospital wa3 the outcome of a letter leceived by him Mr Wise ndi!o<' that Association was not out to hamper tho Government, but to assist in the difficult task of repatriation. NEW POLITICAL PARTY. Auckland. July 10. A proposal will be submitted to a special meeting of the Returned Soldiers' Association to form a separate political party having for its object the propagation of a strong national programme in the Auckland military district and tho electorates therein It is stated that the idea has commended itself to the Auckland provincial executive. NAVAL ADVISER TO THE GOVERNMENT. Wellington, Last Night. Captain Hall Thompson, naval adviser to the Government, who is under orders to proceed to England, will leave for London on August sth. He is being succeeded by Commander T. A. Williams, who will arrive at Wellington by the Briton. SOUTH ISLAND DEVELOPMENT, Timaru, Last Night. At the Development League's conference the following resolutions were passed:---(1) Urging the Government to appoint a commission to consider land tenure in the South Island; (2) asking that §ulßcient land should be purchased in the South Island for soldiers and ethers to obviate the necessity for seeking tenures in the North Island; (3) urging that local experts should be associated with land boards in the purchase and cutting up of land for soldiers' settlements; the encouragement of tourists' traffic; (S) urging the establishment of experimental farms in the South Island with a view to proving the suitability of lucerne as fodder; (0) urging inquiries regarding aerial p\stal services; (7) urging further Utilisation of the High Commissioner's office for commercial purposes; ($) that the Government should encourage immigration; fa) urzing more elastic means for financing soldiers; (10) urging that steamers should leave Dunedin for Wellington calling at' Onmnrn, Timaru and Lvt.telton; (11) that tho Government should guarantee insulated spare for the shipment of meat; (12) urging the erection of a properly equipped sanatorium for the South Island; (13) urging p. progressive policy for opening up . tho country: '(14) asking for a new portfolio of commerce; (IS) urging the speedv completion of the Otira tunnel, and (18) urging that the Government should subsidise the development of the
