The Government agreed that something moist be done, because the. listing Home Rule Act came automatically into operation six months after the war ended. He believed that not a dozen Irish constituencies now wanted it in its present form. The Government recognised it must soon Jiscuss the problem and reach?'a. decision, but, as already stated, it would not sacrifice its friends to Britain's confessed enemies. Neither Ulster nor Sinn Fein would accept dominion Home Rule shorn of control over the army and'navy.
