FABRICATED STEAMERS. Discussing American fabricated steamers, a writer in Fatrplay says; "I havo seen a re-> port of an American fabricated steamer, which has put Into a pott for repairs on her maiden trip, and. If she Is a fair example of this type of vessel, underwriters had better approach the Insurance of them circumspectly. Many of the details are technical, but there is sufficient material for the layman to form an opinion upon/ For instance, the lack of camber to the decks and the high freeing ports, which make the decks a receptacle for water, and the flat hatches, through which wat»r soaks to tho cargo, are obvious Imperfections. The doors of the shelter deck are badly designed, with Inefficient fastenings, and seas which cdme over forward burst the doors open and flood the cargo space. The fuel tanks are improperly placed and badly designed. Their position is such that they work with the vessel In heavy weather and leak. The overflow of the fuel oil pump runs to the bilges instead of overboard. The steam steering gear is complicated, and requires two men at the wheel. The handsteering gear is inaccessible 1 The of the oil furnace are so short that a strong draught snuffs the flame, and makes it difficult to keep up steam. There are other things in the report, too, but sufficient has been quoted to show the nature of the risk which these steamers present." VESSELS FROM OVERSEAS.
