ON DEMOBILISATION AND STATE CONTROL OP COAL. fcjr Telegraph.—Press AB3n.—Copyright. Ohrißtehurch, Last Night In the course of a lecture last night, Bon. G. W. Russell said he sincerely hoped that no military caste would be established in New Zealand, and that the forces would not be kept from demobilising a day longer than was absolutely necessary. He expressed the opinion that private ownership and working of coal mines had absolutely broken down, and they could not expect the capitalist, who was no fool, to put money in to the mines for the purpose of receiving a doubtful one or two per cent, return, when he could put it into broad acres and get gilt-edged security. Hie only thing was for the State to take over the full responsibility of the coal industry and foot the bill. The State should assume control of the whole of the mines and deposits of this country, and look after the coal until it reached the retailers.
