VICTORY LOAN. FIFTEEN: HUNDRED ffILUONS, REMARKABLE LAST DAY 1 Received July 13, ll.fS p.m. London. July 13, It is estimated the Victory Loan closing to-night will reach nearly fifteen hundred millions, one-half ot which is new money.
There was a remarkable last day rush for the Victory Loan, queues of investors forming in many towns. . Manchester easily leads the big cities, the subscriptions there totalling on JViday, making an .aggregate of twenty-six millions, equal to £35 per bead of the population. PRICES CAUSES CONCERN. j COUNCIL OF ALLIES PROPOSED, j By Telepaph.—Press Assn.-"CofyHjht, London, July 11. ' The Food Minister is acutely concerned about prices, though he is not apprehensive regarding supplies. He suggests that a council of the European Allies should replace the expiring Supreme Economical Council. Europe cancot expect America longer to control her home prices for ,the benefit of European consumers. Mr Roberts says no price c<tn be considered safe and prospects for 1920 are not bright.—Aub.-N.Z. Cable- Assn. RAILWAY FREIGHTS PROBLEM. SCHEME OF REFORM. London, July 11. Sir Eric Geddes foreshadows increased railway freights. He says the railways must be made to pay. He has prepared a far-reaching scheme of reforms, ensuring economical use. by eliminating competition, pooling rolling stock, increasing wagon loads, standardising locomotives and preventing delays. There are similar schemes for docks,, roads, and canals. Sir Eric Geddes said that the heads of the departments in the new Ministry had been appointed.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
