BIG FIELDS AND GOOD RACES. (By Wire—Special to. News.) Wellington, Last Night. The second day .'of fihe Wellington Winter meeting was tfty in perfect weather and before a sl'fjtly larger crowd than that present onTthe opening ■ day. Again the people had to get to the j lipitra in motors. There vera many »ifior mishapa by the way, and race] J, X-v. V" . !i

more the prison van, with a party of police aboard, me.t trouble on the journey.

Although class was not well represented, there, were big fields, and the racing was good. There were several close finishes, and one or two . displays of first-class horsemanship. The open steeplechase drew a very moderate'field, and victory rested with the Fordell horse, Gang Awa', who was a boom a year ago, but has not been much in the public eye this season. Boston's horse went to the front soon after the start, and was never headed, but Mcrrie Lad and Master Lupin fought out a good finish for second place, and a daad heat resulted.

The principal flat event was won by the Southlander, Kilkee, whose connections had a very tidy win. The favorite, Gold Kip, got a bad run, and did well to get third. In the chief sprin,t race a warm favorite, Rebekah, led all the way, and won a good race from that great weightearner, Parisian Diamond, who lumped 11.9 into second place.

Orleans, a winner ,on the opening day, was sent out a hot favorite for the Corunna Hurdles, and there was also a solid backing for Signature. When the tapes went up Gold Soult turned tiie wrong way, and refused to go. with > field. Tigerland led a well-bunched jot past the stand the first .time, and Orleans was lying last. Entering the back stretch Wild Pilgrim went up into third place, and Orleans greatly improved her position. Wild Pilgrim was in the lead three furlongs further on, and Signature and Tigerland were handy. Half a mile from home Orleans was done. Wild Pilgrim and Signature came at the last fence together, but a bad jump by the former nearly brought him down, and Signature put a good break on him. Wild Pilgrim came again, and Signature had to be shaken up to win by half a head. Tuticorn was two lengths away, third, and Tigerland was fourth. A field of ten lined up for the Liverpool Handicap, and they were sent away to a V>od start. Rebekah, on the rails, began brilliantly, and she soon hand command of the field. Going easily, she was first into the straight, with Form Up lying la.Bt. Parisian Diamond showed up prominently below the distance, but was vigorously ridden by H. Gray. He could not reach the mare, who won nicely by a length- Gazique, Form Up, and Redshire finished in a line, and third money was awarded Gazique. In the Jumpers' Flat there was a long delay at the barrier due to the bad behavior of Sweet Tipperary. A good start was effected; but Cynic, a slow was soon at the tail of the field. Sweet Tipperary was in the lead when the field had gone a couple of furlongs, with Manu close alongside, and half a mile from home Cynic began to move up, and, going round on the outside, was first into the straight. From then on it was no race, the imported horse winning by five lengths. Want beat Sweet Tipperary on the post for second place, and Movement was fourth, Manu fifth, Hythread sixth, and Multive next.

The selling race saw a hot favorite, Comment, landed home a winner, owing largely to the good horsemanship of Sid Reid. The delay at the post was somewhat painful, and when the barrier went up Daytime got a good break at the ibend on to the course proper. The field 'was bunched, and a little later Post Haste and Trentham Hose were well in the lead. At, the distance Reid brought Comment though, and in a great finish got up to win by a head. Trentham Rose was a close third, and Daytime was fourth. After the race Comment was auctioneered .in the birdcage, and fell to % bid of Mr. J. Pearson, of Upper Riccarton, for 185 guineas. There were half a dozen starters in the Steeplechase, and of these Master Lupin was made a good favorite. Merrie Lad and Gang Awa' led over the first fence, and going out of the straight the order was: Gang Awa', Graftella, Merrie Lad, Polthogue, Vacuum, and Master Vacuum stopped at the fence at the back. With a mile gone, Gang Awa was still in the lead and Merrie Lad was running in second- position. Gang Awa' was not jumping as well as Merrie Lad, but was going away from him on the flat. At the sod wall Polthogue was nearly down, and at the water jump he lost his With a mile to go, Gang Awa', Merrie Lad, and Master Lupin were the only ones really m it. Gang Awa' was never overtaken, and won by 'half-a-dozen lengths. The other pair finished together, and the | judge awarded a dead head. Graftella | tailed off.

* The dozen that paraded for the Peninsula Handicap did no.t provide a very good race. Canzonet got out well and led all the way.. At the distance Imanbbon showed up on the raiis, tat quickly went back. Canzonet won easily by four lengths. Tame Fox was nearly a -e.ngth in front of Sacramento, and Hangi Aroha was fourth. An inquiry was opened into the running of Canzonet, and stands adjourned till Saturday.

The start was a very poor one— Mandrake and Paddington Green were left Damien was early in the lead, and Alteration and Potentiality held a good position just behind, but the favorite was getting a bad run.
