CANTERBURY PROGRESSIVE LEAGUE. By Telegraph.—Press Association, Christchurch, July l). The annual meeting oi the Canterbury Progressive League was attended by 70 delegates. It was resolved to apopiut a committee to collect evidence as to the 'arrears of land in Canterbury suitable for subdivision, also urging the tiovernrueut to take steps to provide laud for small farmers. FISHING- INDUSTRY. Dunedin, July 9. The Hon. G. SI. Thomson announced to the Otago Institute last night that two grants for research work made by the Hay/ Zealand Institute would «ome to Otago. Professor Malcolm would take up a research into the food values of New Zealand fishes and Mr. U. S. Thomson into the economic Yalue of whale feed. He mentions incidentally that whale feed was usually abundant, but disappeared from these waters from January to the middle of November last year. It disappeared again this March and has not been seen since. The suggestion is that these disappearances are connected with iish migration, and consequently will affect the lish supply generally.
