THE RACING DESCRIBED. WHO WON THE STEEPLECHASE? ROOM FOR DOUBT. By Wire.—Special to News. Wellington, July 8. The Wellington Racing Club's Winter meeting v/a3 opened at Irentbam to-day in ideal weather. The good attendance was a tribute to the popularity of the .uport, for, despite ali the difficulties of getting to the course, the people out in good numbers, and an ex* cellent meeting eventuated. Almost everyone who reached the course got there by motor vehicle, as there was absolutely no train service, for the public Big motor busses were Out doing tha twenty mile run from soon after C a.m., and later in ths. day the road between Treutham and the city was simply alive With cars. There were numerous mishaps on the Way, and amongst those to come to grief was the prison van, which had been requisitioned to convey a large staff of police and detectives to the course. The van, meeting trouble by the way, ran down a bank, and came rather badly to grief, but the men in blue were luckf enough to get off without injury. The racing throughout was good After last war's steeplechase every follower of the sport was looking forward to something well out of the ordinary, and so far as the race went there should be U'j regrets, but opinion is much divided as to whether Vascular or Coalition won the Steeplechase. The field fenced in great style throughout, but a well-backed candidate in Troublesome Iran off at the first fence of the double. There was a big field in the Stewards' Handicap. Matatua, beginning well from the outside, soon got the rails and was in the lead'the' Whole way. Risingham was prominent at the bottom of the straight, but faded away. Elocution finished well, but could not overtakt Mataua, who won by a length with * bit in hand. Comment was a good third and Old Gold fourth. Elocution, with Gray up, was favorite.

. There were six starters in the Hacli Steeplechase. Gwynne fall at the first fence, and, going out of the straight the second time, Gaekwar fell. On the flat Torchy led Manawapango for two miles and then the latter ranged alongside, and a fine race home ensued, Manawapango winning by three lengths, with a dozen lengths between second and third and fourth. Gaekwar was favorite. The Trial Plate was won by Swanee River, who was coupled with the favorite, American Beauty. Prince Hal was a good second. When the tapes were released for the big Steeplechase, Waimai shot to the front and led over the first fence, witV Coalition and VasciilaV following. At the sod wall there was little change in the order of running, and the water jump saw Waimai leading Vascular, with Coalition next, then Bon Reve, Troublesome, Vacuum and Mastet Strowan. The field was jumping beautifully. Going up the hack stretch Waimai still held command, with Coalition lying handy, and Troublesome and Bon Reve not far away. At the double, in front of the stand, Troublesome, getting squeezed toward the outer, Tan off. Entering on the final mile Waimai, Coalition and Vascular (in that order) led the field. Half a mile from home Coalition ran into the lead, and Bon Reve went after him. ' Vascular stuck close to the pair. Coalition was first into the straight. and first over the last hurdle, but Vascular finished very gamely under an d the two crossed the line with but little between them, the judge deciding in favor of Vascular. Bon Revo was thro a lengths away. The time ; '6.54) is a record for the race. Bon i Reve will be improved by the race, and Waimai performed like a probable National winner. In the Winter Hurdles, Lftyal Arch and Movement were early in the van, With Sea Down and Rewi Poto lying I next v Three furlongs from home Loyal Arch still held licr lead, but Paraoa was i moving up, and Omahu was Iving very I handy. Sea Down became prominent just after entering the straight, and a good race ensued. Over the last furlong, Omahu came away and won very nicely by two lengths, with a similar distance between second and third. The winner is good, and'will be heard of again. The start for the Parliamentary Handicap was a bad one, Sir Agnes, Paddington Green, and Crosswords being left several lengths. Battle Array and Gold Kip soon Sot to the front, and they he!d the lead to the end. All Over finished well in third place. Athens IF. was fourth, and Alteration fifth. Alteration was favorite.' Gold Kip maj be better suited by one of the mile races at the meeting.

Twenty hoTses lined up for the final event of the day. Guanaco was favorite, and there was a fot of money for Sea Sprite and Dainty Step. Dainty Step ?ot out well and led throughout. Imaribbon was a good second and Kyoto a close third. Manu was fourth.
