AGRICULTURAL ADVANCEMENT.
GOVERNMENT'S PROPOSALS. TO ASSIST IN SCIENTIFIC WORK. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Christchurcli, Last Niglit. At a meeting of the Board o£ Governors of the Canterbury Agricultural College a letter was read from the Hon. Mac Donald slating that the Government had decided to eo-operate with the college in the special work connected with agricultural advancement, particularly on the lines of plant breeding and selection, and to provide a suitable subsidy in connection with this co-operation work. The proposal was that the college authorities, in conjunction with the Department, should undertake the work of isolation and experimental testing of pure lines of wheat and seed oats, the Department to subsidise the college to the extent of £3OO per annum, either in the shape of cash, or partly in the shape of furnishing an assistant to help on this special work. Later stages of work would necessitate general testing of pure lines of seeds to determine their value under varying soil and climatic conditions, and provision for the adequate annual suply of seed of approved value which had been found to be of improved quality, this part of the work to be carried out by the Department by arrangement with reliable farmers in suitable districts.
Tie board agreed to consider the matter and advise the Department of its decision.
