OPUNAKE.
TOWN BOARD. (From Our Own Correspondent.) The ordinary meeting was held on Monday evening. The members present were: Messrs C. A. Trotter (chairman), G. W. Rogers, C. Sorrensen, E. L. Thorpe, J. P. Burton. The chairman gave notice of intention to take a fresh poll on the hydro-electri-tal proposal to raise a loan of £7,01 H), Owing to an error in the amount of rate taken in the 1917 poll, proceedings have to be taken afresh' The headmistress of the school (which is now in the Town Hall) complained about the bad state the supper room was in after a recent ball. It appears that things were left in a good state, and the foodstuffs over from the ball (left for the children) were strewn about the floor. The board had attended to the matter immediately after receiving the school mistress' note. A communication was received from Messrs Roy and Nicholson regarding legal nut Iters in relation to the Hydroelectric proposals. Messrs Rogers and Thorpe were appointed a committee to attend to the documents and report at nc.vt meeting. The foreman reported attending to various roads, rounding up metal, and weeding footpaths.
On (he foreman's recommendation, a progrM.-i payment was passed to Mr. Hickey lor carting boulder stone. Mr. Vincent asked the'board to metal the roadway to his private residence. The application was deferred until estimates of work lor the year were considered.
Tin: forenum reported that fees collected for po'.iiidage on county and board stocic amounted to £4 2s. The board allowed the foreman half of the fees collected.
The statement for gas for the past month showed a surplus of £4B. It was decided to lower the rate on gas to 25s per 1000 feet. The presant charge is 37s 6 A.
The clerk reported having written to the Health Department and medical Anns pointing out that Dr. Barron had relinquished hip practice here. He has been for the last three years with the Expeditionary Force, and is still retained at Trentham Hospital. The Health Department promised every assistance in procuring a medical man for this district. GENERAL. At the Presbyterian Church on Sunday evening special reference was made by the Rev. Mill to the departure of Dr. and Mrs. Barron, Mr. and Mrs. Greonhill and family, and Mr. and Mrs. Markham and family from our midst. They had all been staunch supporters of the Presbyterian Church, and he wished them God speed. The two last-named families are going on to their farms milking, and it means an exodys froiii Opunake of IS persons- Mr. and Mrs. Parkes will reside in Hawera. The departure of 24 from one congregation will not only leave a gap there, but also in the town. Dr. Watt paid a visit to Opunake to take a ''bird's eye View" of the place, regarding conditions for future practice. He made no decision.
