GENERAL PURPOSES COMMITTEE. j / The General Purposes Committee of the New Plymouth Borough Council met last night, there being present the Mayor (Mr. C. !H. Burgess), Crs. ' J. Clarke, J. W. Eayden, F. i. Hill, \V. A. Collis, K. L. Parkin, and Y. H. S. Griffiths. An apology for absence was received from Crs. !W. P. Short and A. S. Brooker. The Minister of Internal Affairs (the Hmj. G. W. Eussell) wrote in reply to the Council's inquiry a3 to loans for the purpose of the erection of houses for tile Council's permanent employees, stating that the Government had the /, matter under consideration, and that a further reply would be communicate-'' \vhen a decision was arrived at. The Borough Engineer submitted an eßtimate of the cost of re-metalling the £outh Road, from the Breakwater fioaa to the County boundary, a width of lift, amount to £604 7s 4d, or, if tarred, a further sum of £350. , On the motion of Cr. ClaTke and the Mayor it was resolved to authorise the work of metalling.
