WOOL AND SHEEPSKIN SALES
Received July 7,10.15 p.m. London, July 4. The wool sales have concluded. There Was keen competition throughout tho series. Continental buyers operated ftvely for merino combings and scoureds, the prices for merino combings bfcing fully maintained at the high level. Faulty sorts, especially carbonising sorts, attracted French anil Belgian buyers, and prices advanced 10 pet cent, as compared with the last series. Fine crossbreds fully maintained last Beries rates, and medium strengthened during the series, closing a,t about equal to last series. Low and coarse crossbreds were irregular, and prices on many occasions favored buyers. Shabby lots declined 10 per cent. Scoureds and slipes were in good demand, except for low grades. Ten thousand bales of sheepskins were offered to-day, all being sold at prices fully equal to May rates. THE HEMP MARKET. Wellington, Last Night. The Department of Agriculture has received the following cablegram, dated July 6, from the High Commissioner for New Zealand:— Manila market firm with moderate demand for grade afloat. Current spot quotation for hemp is £55. Shipment to be in July, August, or September, £54 16s. New Zealand market quiet, quantities landed and on the way contracted for at late maximum prices, affecting the demand. Fair inquiry, for forward shipments at about £sl 15a to £52. HIDES AND TALLOW REPORT. Dalgety and Co. report: We held our usual fortnightly sale of hides and tallow on Friday last, when we submitted a good catalogue to the usual attendance of buyers. Those lines which were not selected by tanners at schedule rates Were submitted to auction, and met with been competition from the exporters present. Prices for medtum and lightweight cows showed a slight advance on last sale's rates, whilst all other lines were about on a par. Tbe tallow market Is again very firm, and prices showed another advance on late rates. We quote: HIDES. HR Hides.—Ox, heavy (601bs up) 12% dto 15% d, medium (50 to 59) llftd to 14d, light (48 and under) 10% d to 14d; cow, heavy (SSlbs and over) lid to 13% d, medium (42 to 54) lid to 14% d, light (under 42) lid to 14%; cut, slippy and Inferior, 7d to 13% d; bull stag, B%d to 10% d; yearlings (lfllbs to 241ba), lOd to 14% d; calf, superior (up to 161bs), 16d to 24d, medium to good 13d to 17% d, damaged 9d to 17% d. Tallow —ln casks, 55s to 6Sa; in tins, etc., 31s to 51s. Sundries.—Horsehair 8d to 15d; talis, 9d to 9ttd per dozen. LOAN AND MERCANTILE REPORT. The New Zealand loss and Mercantile Agency Company, Limited (Hawera branch) reports as follows: At Opunake, on Monday, we held our usual fortnightly sale, and prices realised were as follows: Forward cows, £8 8s to £8 15s; store cows, £5 8s to £6; weaner heifers, £8 8s; 20-month steers, £5 ss; springing hellers. £8 10s to £ll lis. At Manala, on Tuesday, we had a small yarding, and report a total clearance under the hammer at the following prices: light fat cows, £lO 2s to £lO 7s 6d; forward cows, £8 2s to £8 14s; store cows, £6 10s to £T ss; weaner heifers, £3 19s; weaner steers, £2 10s; lambs; 18s. On Wednesday, 2nd instant, we held a successful sale of pedigree Jersey heifers, on account of Messrs. A. and J. O'Donnell. The heifers were a choice lot, and were purchased follows: Engarl (O. Wells, Fending), 10% guineas; Queen of Inaha (A. H. Gilbert, Matapu), 34 guineas; Hosy Creek M. Lady (A. Bobertson, Hawera), 82% guineas; Gallantry (J. E Mortimer, Okalawa), 70 guineas; War Maid (R. Hicks, Hawera), 30 guineas; Finery (O. Wells), 30 guineas; Drought (A. H. Gilbert), 40 guineas; Uarda (J. Phillips, Jnr., Eitham), 45% guineas; Hosy Creek R. Princess (H. Wells, Hawera), 5014 guineas; Munition (A. W. Yates, Inglewood), 36% guineas; Llnneta (D. Hurley, Manala), 21 guineas; Staccato (G. Wells), 20% guineas; Hosy Creek Lass (D. Hurley), 31% guineas; Hosy Creek Flower (G. Wells), 41 guineas. Jersey grade weaners realised £6 10s.
At our Palmer Road sale on Friday, 4th Instant we had a fair entry of cattle, which met with keen competition, with the exception of dairy stock, which were not In demand. Light fat cows, £lO 17s to £ll 12s; forward cows, £9 Is to £lO 2s 6d; store cows, £5 to £7 3s; weaner heifers, £3 10s to £4 10s; weaner steers, £4 2s; mixed weaners, £2 15a to £3 4s; Jersey weaner heifers, £5 Is. At Waverlej l , on Friday, we had a small yarding. Prices wore as follows: Two, four and a-tooth empty ewes, 275; lambs, ISs.
