REPAIRS TO VESSEL By Telegraph,—Press Association. Dunedin, July 7. The tender by Stevenson and Cook lor permanent repairs to the Bteamer Westmorland at Port Chalmers has been accepted. It is understood there is the possibility that additional work may be found necessary, in which case the total cost will b© augmented to over £30,000. QOAL RATIONINGS. Christchurch, July 7. The first supply of municipal coal arrived in Lyttelton from Greymouth. The Mayor states the maximum given to each consumer is - two bag's. PROTEST AGAINST ALLEGED GERMAN CAPTAIN. * Auckland, July 7. The Merchant Service Guild express indignation owing to the employment of an alleged German skipper on an Auckland coastal vessel after the guild had been instrumental in preventing liirngoing to sea as master of a steamer. Early last year a resolution was carried that the Government be notified that if this man goes to sea, or as soon as it is known that the German has 3ailed in any ship, the guild members will leave thejr ships on the following day.
AUCKLAND CITY SCHOOLS. Auckland, July 7. The serious overcrowding which .'exists In school* of tin- city and the environs of Auckland is preventing many children from getting the full benefit of instruction which should be available under the educational system of the Dominion. In order to overcome this difficulty the Auckland Education Board has now in hand a programme of school construction nnd extensions which, with new sites, will involve an expenditure of over £IOO,OOO.
