The Taranaki County Council is considering the question of ejecting wornpen's homes for some of its <Mid at yesterday's meeting the question of erecting two in the Waitara riding was referred to the chairman, Cr. J. G. Andrews.
Yesterday three cases of drunlcennest> were dealt with by Mr. iS. E. McCarthy, S.M. John J. Larkin was fined 20s, is default 48 hows' imprisonment. Henry F. Callaghan was fined 10s, in default 48 hours, and a first offender was fined ss, in default 24 hours.
In connection with the proposal to utilise the pound site at Lepperton for the purpose of a memorial site, the Land Department notified ,that a special Act would be required, as there appeared to be no power in the Public Reserves and Domains Act for the purpose.
When an application for an Increase in wages from the county employees was before the Hawera County Council on Saturday, the chairman (Mr. C. J. Hawken) said the rise in wages since the war started took one-seventh of their rates. If these increases continued it would ultimately mean an increase in the rates.
In spite of the wintry weather which prevailed on Sunday, the people of Hawera celebrated Thanksgiving Day fittingly. There were, states th* Star, large attendances at the various churches and at the great combined service in the Opera House in the afternoon.
A motor car was, says the Argus, driven thrgugh Eltham on Saturday morning at a most furious rate. The car apparently came from the direction of Stratford, antf was being driven in the direction of Hawera. Whether the driver was mad, or drunk, it is impossible to say, but he was yelling like a lunatic as he dashed through the town. Tf he reached the end, of his journey safely he is a lucky man.
11l response to Si request that an officer of the Public Works Department should bo sent to report on the practibility of constructing a light railway to the Upper Carringion Road in order to make available large quantities of firewood and milling timber, Mr. S. 6. Smith, M.P., has received a reply from the Minister of Public Works (Hon. W. Fraser) stating that he would forward an officer to report as soon as one was free, but he pointed out that the Department was still very short staffed owing to several of the engineers not ye,t having returned from the front.
At a -meeting of the vestry of Te Henui and Bell Block the vicar (RevH. A. Favell) reported that St. Luke's Church, Bell Block, had been repaired and a concrete path formed from the road to the church by the voluntary labor of a band of workers. A resolution expressing appreciation of the services rendered was passed unanimously. The working party whose labors were thus acknowledged consisted ot Messrs C. Colson, R. Day, A. Giddy, G. Giddy, R. Hoby, A. Hoskin, F. Hoskin, H. J. Johnstone, G. King, L. Laurent, S. Styles, and Collar.
"In our district we recognise that all roads lead to Stratford. We are beginning to recognise that all roads in the Taranaki province lead to New Plymouth"—Cr. E. Walter, Chairman of the Stratford County Council said, in the course of his address at the deputation to the Taranaki County Council .yesterday. The Mayor of New Plymouth later stated that all roads led to New Plymouth, and they were quite willing to admit this, and wanted to encourage traffic hither and not to baulk it in any way. The state of the Main South Road within tho borough boundary was again the subject of comment at the meeting of the Taranaki County Council yesterday, when Cr. C. Andrews stated that he was tired of being "sooled" on to by lots of ratepayers regarding the state of the road, and so as to remove any misconception regarding tho ownership of the road he intended to movi that a notice be erected stating that "this is the end of the County." TKs chairman, however, stated that th,-. Borough Council intended to renew the road, and was arranging to obtain its supply of metal from the countv for the purpose. * A meeting of the executive of the Taranaki School Committees' Association was held last night. Correspondence was received from Mr. A. J. White, secretary of the Wellington School Committees' Association, re the question of appointing a delegate to attend a Dominion conference of school committees' associations. It was resolved to approve of the holding of the conference, and Mr. S. Smith was appointed delegate. The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile, Ltd., draw attention to the alteration of the date of Mr. Wm. Hallett's clearing sale from Thursday, July 17, to Friday, July 18. They also notify a clearing sale on behalf of Mr. W. Huzziff on Thursday, July 17, at Toko Road.
