STRATFORD.

(Prom Our Own Correspondent.) (All communications, letters, etc., left with Mr H. J. Hopkins, bookseller, will receive prompt attention.) Stratford, -Tuly 3. ■ A Stratford business man stated yesterday that the restrictions placed by the Railway Department on the carriage of goods were resented by business people, in view of the fact that beer, wine or spirits can be forwarded by rail while aueh things as cement and other building materials are refused. It was pointed out that in the notice issued by the Department setting out the goods tlijit could be carried, beer, wine and spirits were first excluded, and that this notice was subsequently altered by striking out the word "not." A further hardship, it was stated, is being imposed upon business people by the post office, which refuses to handle parcels except in a very restricted way. The nett profit from the diggers' ball amounted to £55 4s Bd. At a meeting of the committee on Wednesday evening it was decided to thank Messrs. A. Rawles, Newton King and H. Masters for the use of motor cars, Mr. C. Martin for trellis work, Messrs. Weston Bros, for the use pi furniture, and Messrs. J. Pearee and W. Brocklebank for assistance in the kitchen.

At the Stratford Model Dairy Farm, on Wednesday morning, Mr. J. W. Deem, fields instructor, gave the boys of the Stratford District High School a lesson in cow-testing. To impress upon the boys th» necessity for testing they were divided into groups, and asked to select from a herd six of the worst cows. The results showed their'judgment to be very much at fault. In their endeavors to pick out the best cows the boys met with no better success. The instructor ,then impressed upon them that the proper culling of herds was impossible without testing. A euchre party and dance were held in the Toko Hall on Tuesday night. Miss F. Cosbrook and Mr. J, Roguski won the euchre prizes, the "booby" prizes going to Misa Cook and Mr. Curreen. Music for the dancfc was played by Mrs. Bianchi, and extras were played by Misses Scott and Leydon (2), and Mr. C. Curreen Mr. Gernhoefer acted as M.C. Songs were contributed by Miss Scott and Mr. P. Aitken.

In the Parish Hall on Wednesday evening a social, organised by Mesdames Massey and Coleman, in aid of the Belgian stall at the forthcoming Catholic bazaar, was held. Notwithstanding the unfavorable weather there was a good attendance, and the function, both socially and financially, was a success. Music for the dance was provided by Mrs. Bianchi, who wa3 assisted by Mr. Vinsen. Mr. James carried out the duties of M.C. It is intended to hold anather social in a fortnight's time. The invitation issued by the Mayor (Mr. J. W. McMillan) to attend a meeting in the Borough Council chambers on Wednesday night, for the purpose of forming a railway league, met with such a poor response from citizens that th® meeting could not be held. Prob--ably another attempt to get those interested together will be made later. T. Lamason gives a final reminder of the furniture sale to be held to-day at Juliet Street on behalf of Mrs. Dyson, 'The house property will also be otfered on the same occasion.
