During the Transport Bill debate in the House of Commons, when pressed by the Unionists' threat that many would dissociate from the Government if the latter adopted the principle of nationalisation before appealing to the country, Mr. Shortt assured the House that nothing would be done under the Bill to make nationalisation inevitable. He was unable to give a pledge whether or not the improvement in transport might or might not affect the question , of nationalisation, but he declared the Government would not knowingly or willingly do anything under the Bill to advance the question if it arose. Sir Auckland Geddes was equally emphatic that the question was as open to-day as ever.—Aus. N.Z. Cable Assoc. RESTRICTIONS ON LIQUOR REMOVED. Received July 3, 8.15 ip.m. 1 London, July 1. Mr. Bonar Law announced that unlimited brewing would be permitted and the specific gravity of beer raised by four degrees in ea<3i grade. THE COAL REPORT. Received July 3, 8.15 p.m. London, July I. Asked in the House whether the Government would accept Mr. Justice Sankey's coal report, Mr. Bonar Law replied : "I caitont make a statement until the Government has given the subject the fullest consideration."—Aus. N.Z. Cable Assoc. U.S. OFFICERS DECORATED. ' London, July 2. Field-Marshal Haig, at the Horse Guards parade, on behalf of the King, presented decorations to American officers. He said these awards were "not only well earned, but were evidence of the close friendship between the two armies and proved the British solders' admiration, esteem and real affection for their American comrades.—Aus.iN.Z.
