THE HOME OF THE WINTER SHOW.

HAWERA: A PROGRESSIVE TOWN. Hawera, the home of the Dominion Winter Show, is a. very progressive town of about 5000 population, if the portion of the town within the county is included, for the borough itself is small, having an area of only 750 acres. The town presents an air of stability, the buildings erected showing that residents have'absolute confidence in the future of their town, as indeed they have every reason to have, seeing that the town is situate in the centre of probably the best dairying country in the dominion, land that is closely settled and heavily fitockedj and from Hawera excellent roads—roads that are looked upon with envy by visitors from afar—radiate in every direction through this oonntry, making the town the business centre of a very large and thriving district. Some idea of the business of the town may be gleaned from the following return of tht last season's output of the vari--1 ous dairy factories, doing business in the country surrounding Hawera:—

Hawera • 152,000 Riverdale 06,000 Kaupokonni 245,000 T. L. Joll 197,060 Normanby 60,000 Mella , 32,000' Mere Mere 36,000 Ararat*. 21,000 Melroae ;... 8,000 Total £897,000 In addition, there are factories farther afield whose produce comes through Ha went, and the advent of the motor car, combined with the good roads, has also very much increased the scope of the country whose ■ settlers now look upon. Hawer* as thejr market town. The tendency, too, js for a great increase to be looked forward to in the near future, as the high prices ruling for land in the district—some being quoted as high as £lso—will mean further subdivision, with more intensive farming and improved herds. Moreover, there are possibilities in the treatment of milk and its by-products.that may considerably increase the value of the district's production. It must also be remembered that the figures quoted only give the results of the yield 1 of milk, and do not include calves, pigs or any other of the side lines attached to farmers, whilst, in addition, there is a considerable amount of fattening done in the district.
