TURF TOPICS. (By "Motuioa".) The drastic curtailment of the railway services threatens to upset many businesses, and racing, in common with other sports, will be seriously affected. Fortunately the curtailment has come at what is practically the off season, the only meeting of importance likely to be affected being the Wellington Racing Club's winter meeting. Most of the horses engaged at Trenthain can be carried per. steamer, but the cutting down of various trains will affect the attendance. It is hoped that the position will be easier by the time the New Zealand Grand National meeting in August comes round.
Regarding the alleged condition of the old 'chaser Bercola, Mr. J. R. L. Stanford writes to an Auckland paper denying the of neglect. It is pleasing to hear that the old horse is well cared for, and is enjoying the best of health. Bercola is being used as a hack on Mr. R. Self's property at Te Kuiti. : The fences at Hastings badly beat the alleged steeplechasers seen out at the recent .meeting; uv fact, the cross country' events were farcical. The fiawke's Bay; Steeplechase was a fiasco, not one of the six starters getting round withcnj{; mishap. Vacuum ran off at the flrst fence, and Foeman and Ormesby did likewise at. the back double. Polthogue fell at the stone wall in the second round, and this only left Bon Reve and Styrax in the race. Frank Flynn, who bad,, been: emptied off jfoeman, climbed aboard Bon Revej and came in alone, but could .not draw the weight. Polthogue and vacuum were also remounted, but the .former fell again, and Vacuum declined ~to jump the stone wall. Polthogue was again mounted, and struggled home next, with Styrax third. The "race" was awarded to Polthogue, with Styrax second.
Mr. J. Bull, junr., picked up some more jewellery at Hastings, where the useful Omahu won both Bracelet and Necklace. Mr. Bull could stock a city establishment with such trifles.
"Another Paisano" is the high praise bestowed on Multive by a good judge of horseflesh in Gisborne. A likely National horse is Multive.
Everybody was pleased' to see Percy Johnson gather three good stakes witn Movement at Hawke's Bay. The niare has been running consistently of lak;, and was very well. Her jumping has improved wonderfully since she just Scrambled home in the hurdles at Opu-
One, bar von had stiff luck on Friday. wrote Bon Reve's name, and when that heddy was distanced he had ■the? 'doubtful pleasure of paying out a good price on Polthogue. Maori Tikanga wouldhave been another "skinner" for the book, but 1 alas, that prad went out also. Taking it on the whole, the meeting; was not a bad 1 one for the layers,
